The Haunted Miranda Castle, Belgium. This castle has stood empty since 1991. Although the municipality of Celles has offered to take it over, the family has refused, and the enormous building is now in a derelict state. Some claim this place is haunted and the clock on the tower moves a minute counterwise everyday!

Glacier

Evigheds Fjord, Eternity Glacier in West Greenland in September 2009. The name may be Eternity Glacier, but at the current rate of glacial retreat, thanks to climate change, it may need a new one.

First Cold
First cold by Andrei Reinol
This morning showed me aspects of nature I have been waiting for a long time. Below zero temperature had turned the ground white and a stunning sunrise was waiting in the sky. I can't wish for more than that. Estonia.

Reyhan Bridge
Italian creator Dimitri Waltritsch says, "Constructing a gate to a residential complex might be considered a privilege for an architect, as it allows him to get in touch with the most intimate side of people’s everyday life. The entrance will warmly receive the people back home, and bless them before they leave for their daily activities in the world."
Crown
Polish designer Michal Nowak creates another stunning 3D visualisation with this design for the 'Crown House'. The razor sharp edges and beautiful execution make this a landscape design to marvel at.
The garden of Louis XIV
The garden of Louis XIV in Versailles, France is probably one of the world's most famous gardens. Built for Louis XIV and designed by Andre Le Notre it's a landscape design classic that ticks all the right boxes. Stunning and timeless.

liaohe River Delta
Liaohe River Delta contains a very unique piece of landscape, the Red Beach. Not far from Panjin City, China lies a beach that during the summer months looks like any other beach. Beautiful waters and a bit of green sea weed.
Than as the seasons change so does the sea weed. The green sea weed that blankets the entire beach turns red like fire in the autumn. Hence the reason it is called the Red Beach. Most of the beach is a nature reserve; there is however a small portion open to tourists to observe the amazing color and birds that thrive near it.

La Silla
What may look like a futuristic city out of a science fiction story, floating high above the clouds, is ESO’s longest-serving observatory, La Silla. This photograph was taken by astronomer Alan Fitzsimmons while standing near the ESO 3.6-metre telescope just after sunset. The Moon is located just outside the frame of this picture, bathing the observatory in an eerie light that is reflected off the clouds below.
The very faint band of glowing golden light just above the clouds still illuminated by the sunset is the zodiacal light. It is caused by sunlight diffused by dust particles between the Sun and the planets. This can only be seen just after sunset or just before sunrise, at particular times of year, from very good sites.
Several telescopes can be seen in this photograph. For example, the large angular structure at the end of the road is the New Technology Telescope (NTT). True to its name, when completed in 1989 the telescope included a number of revolutionary features including being the first to use full active optics as well as a revolutionary octagonal enclosure. Many of the NTT’s features went on to be incorporated into ESO’s Very Large Telescope.
The dome in the foreground, just to the right is the Swiss 1.2-metre Leonhard Euler Telescope named in honour of the famous Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler (1707–83).
Alan submitted this photograph to the Your ESO Pictures Flickr group. The Flickr group is regularly reviewed and the best photos are selected to be featured in our popular Picture of the Week series, or in our gallery.

Grand Canyon Lightning
Rex Features/ Rolf Maeder
Photographer Rolf Maeder captured a series of low exposure shots of multiple lightning strikes on the Grand Canyon, when he was travelling in the US in August.
"On the Moran Point we noticed that far away a lightning storm was building up," Maeder explains. "That was much more than we expected, so we started setting up our tripods and started to take pictures."
