Grand Canyon Lightning

Rex Features/ Rolf Maeder

Photographer Rolf Maeder captured a series of low exposure shots of multiple lightning strikes on the Grand Canyon, when he was travelling in the US in August.
"On the Moran Point we noticed that far away a lightning storm was building up," Maeder explains. "That was much more than we expected, so we started setting up our tripods and started to take pictures."

Mother of Pearls

These kind of clouds (called Mother of Pearls, or nacreous clouds) are very rare, but mostly to be seen on the northen part of the earth, in the middle of winter. These clouds are very colorful and beautiful. I have only seen these clouds two times in my life. (the quality of this photo is not so good, it was taken with an old Fujifilm camera)

Midnight Dreams

Midnight Dreams

Low lying wisps of clouds lit with moon light as Majestic Shasta lay where Heaven and Earth meet!!! There was a symphony of Shasta's regal way as 2 worlds converged.
Thanks to Scott and Brian Rueb for sharing this location. The first night I drove here it was completely dark, eerie and spooky. I was so enamored, I went back with Karrie Ann, Zach and there was this celestial nightscape!

Wild Goose Island, Glacier National Park

Sunset over St. Mary Lake and Wild Goose Island, August 2011. I started to shoot an HDR, and have about 100 bracketed shots from 5-6 locations but in the end i decided on this one. My grad ND's gives a slight purple color cast and it actually worked out great in this shot for the sky.

I live in Montana and even though this is a 6 hour drive from home, I was able to pre-plan this shot a little. I was there for a week so I had a good idea about the time, and that the weather had been a bit stormy all week. The location is well known and its 20ft from the road, Get there, setup, and just wait. There are a lot of things I wish I would have done differently, but I was in a hurry to get the image in the bag. Next time I'll try to get this on a big ole piece of 4x5 Velvia.

HIMALAYAS

The Himalayan range is home to the planet's highest peaks, including the highest, Mount Everest. The Himalayas include over a hundred mountains exceeding 7,200 metres (23,600 ft) in height. By contrast, the highest peak outside Asia—Aconcagua, in the Andes— is 6,961 metres (22,838 ft) tall.[2] The Himalayas have profoundly shaped the cultures ofSouth Asia. Many Himalayan peaks are sacred in both Buddhism and Hinduism.

Railway Bridge, Japan

Photograph by Teruo Araya, Your Shot

On an early summer morning, Teruo Araya captured this image of a train on Japan Rail's Tadami line as it passed through Fukushima Prefecture. "The haze generated by the river created a fantasy world," as the train crossed the railway bridge, Araya says. For the Your Shot contributor, the sight expressed the recovery of the people of Fukushima, defying the earthquake and nuclear accident of March 2011. "But it is like an endless journey."

Batsto Mansion Star Trails - Batsto Village, NJ

Stars swirl over the former residence of ironmasters from the past. Simply known as the Batsto Mansion,it sits at the center of the village that produced bog iron from 1766-1867.

"I got to hang out with my friends Jay of Cass Imaging & Ben of Reclaimed LLC for a bit to explore Batsto last night. I've actually never been to the park during the day, but after last night I'll definitely be heading back when it's a little easier to explore. Definitely a fun night. Be sure to swing by their pages to see what they caught!"
